The dental implant is a small titanium screw that is installed in the jaw bone. This artificial root integrates perfectly with the bone tissue. It is used to replace one or more missing teeth, to support a crown, a bridge or a dental prosthesis.
Titanium, a biocompatible material
The affinity of titanium with the human body has been known since the 1950s. Thanks to the phenomenon of osseointegration, this metal is completely biocompatible. Osseointegration is defined as the ability of living bone to colonize and bond to the titanium of an implant. Osseointegration thus allows the implant to play a role of stable and resistant anchorage, just like a natural dental root. Indeed, dental implants made of titanium have been shown to be durable, resistant to masticatory forces and as strong as natural roots. This is how when osseointegration is completed around the implant (3 to 6 months after implantation), the only way to remove this implant is to drill the bone that is located all around.
Is rejection possible?
PuSince titanium is completely biocompatible, the implant does not behave like a foreign body. It would therefore be better to use the term “failure” instead of dental implant rejection, because dental implant rejection does not exist, strictly speaking. If the implantation fails, the implant becomes mobile and painful. It is then removed and we wait for a new bone healing (3 to 6 months) before being able to put a new implant. But such a failure is rare, around 1 to 2%.
Is it a complex surgery?
When we talk about an implant, we often imagine a complicated and painful surgery. But the placement of dental implants is generally a minor surgery. The inconveniences and recommendations following the procedure are similar to those following a tooth extraction: possible pain and bleeding for a few days, swelling and bruising which generally subside after 24 to 72 hours. Finally, a healing period of about 3 to 4 months is necessary for the human body to rebuild new mature bone cells that will attach to the implant and fuse it to the bone. After this period, your dentist will be able to place the final restoration: a crown, a porcelain bridge or an acrylic prosthesis.
